Bullfrogs or Two

You’re sitting on the lanai, the patio or even around the fire after a long day. Perhaps you went to the beach or on a boat or maybe just cleaned the car and cut the grass. In any case it is distinctly summertime.  If you are sitting near the lake, the pond or your favorite stream, what might you hear in the tall grass, a Bullfrog or two maybe more.

Facts about Bullfrogs

They are the largest frogs in North America. They can be found in a variety of natural and manmade habitats. Bullfrogs are native to the central and eastern United States, from Nova Scotia to Central Florida, from the Atlantic Ocean to Wisconsin, through the Great Plains to the Rockies.

They like lakes, ponds and swamps but in Florida are more prevalent in brackish waters, canals and what Floridians refer to as retention ponds. A retention pond is an artificial basin created for run-off stormwater. They are functional and decorative, landscaped with tall grasses, wetland plants and shrubs – the perfect habitat for a Bullfrog.  And less frequent for their cousins the gator to visit.

Bullfrogs can be a food source. “Frog Legs – taste like chicken.” Not really, but that is what they say.  You dredge them through flour, breadcrumbs or crushed saltine crackers with some Cajun spice then deep fry them, on occasion they taste pretty good.

I like Bullfrogs for the things they eat. They reduce the mosquito population, in Florida that would be the state bird, and they eat snakes. Those are two of my least favorite things. So, what’s not to like?  But I must say – my favorite thing about Bullfrogs is drinking them.
